Problem solving is defined by the Government of Canada (2021) as “your ability to identify, analyze, propose solutions, and make decisions.” You encounter problem solving every day. These can be simple occurrences that you might not even consider as problems but rather a part of your daily routine. These can also be very complex occurrences that don’t have immediate solutions or require a lot of time to solve.

Why are problem-solving skills important?

You regularly use diverse information to help you assess situations, make decisions, and implement solutions. Your ability to gather the right information helps you take appropriate actions. When you evaluate and learn from your problem-solving experiences, you improve and strengthen your ability to adapt quickly and successfully to change. Many organizations value and rely on people who can assess difficult or unexpected situations and effectively identify and implement solutions.
